Everything you need to get farming
A practical walk-through of the app — from your first sign-in to sending a Demeter dossier to your inspector.
Quick start
1. Try the live demo (30 seconds)
Tap 'Try live demo' on the home page to load a sample farm with 14 months of history — beds, harvests, notes and cosmic history. Nothing is saved to the cloud; it lives only in your browser.
Open home2. Create your account
Sign in with Google or email. Your data (beds, plans, harvests, seed stock, livestock, field notes) syncs to the cloud automatically so you can open the app on any device.
Sign in3. Set up your farm
In Profile → Farm, enter your farm name and coordinates (or tap 'Use my location'). This unlocks accurate cosmic timings, local weather, frost warnings and spray windows.
Open profile4. Add your beds and first sowing plan
In Calendar → Plan, add your beds (name, size, current crop). Then pick a crop from the library and the app will show upcoming Leaf / Flower / Fruit / Root windows that match it.
Open calendar5. Turn on the notifications you want
In Profile → Preferences, choose from 16+ alert types — daily briefing, cosmic day-type flips, frost warnings, spray windows, task reminders, prep spraying days, and more.
Notification settings
Reading the calendar
- What do Leaf / Flower / Fruit / Root mean?
- Maria Thun's classification: when the moon passes a water sign it's a Leaf day (good for lettuce, cabbage, chard), fire = Fruit (tomatoes, beans, grain), earth = Root (carrot, beet, potato), air = Flower (broccoli, sunflower, herbs for essential oils). The Today tab tells you which one it is right now.
- What is 'ascending' vs 'descending' arc?
- Ascending moon: sap rises — good for grafting, harvesting fruit, cutting scions. Descending moon: sap moves to roots — good for transplanting, pruning, composting, root harvest. The arc chart on the Today tab shows the current position.
- What are node / perigee / apogee warnings?
- Times when cosmic influences disturb plant growth. Avoid sowing and transplanting on these days — the calendar shades them and the notification hub can alert you the evening before.
- Why does the day change mid-afternoon sometimes?
- The moon crosses constellations at real astronomical moments, not at midnight. The 'Next change' line under Today shows the exact hour, and the ICS feed places the transition at the correct time.
Field log & photos
- How do I log work I did today?
- Calendar → Fields → New note. Add text (voice dictation works on Chrome/Android), tags, and photos. Weather (temp, wind, rain, soil temperature) is auto-filled from your farm coordinates.
- Can I search old notes?
- Yes — Profile → Field Log shows everything with tag filters and full-text search. Export any date range as CSV from Profile → Preferences.
- Do photos count against my storage?
- Photos are compressed to ~200 KB JPEGs before upload. A typical season's photos fit easily inside the free tier.
Weather & alerts
- Where does the weather data come from?
- Open-Meteo (free, community-run, no key required). Data refreshes every hour for your farm coordinates.
- What is a 'spray window'?
- Calendar → Insights → Spray Window Advisor scores each of the next 5 days by wind, rain, humidity and temperature — green = spray now, red = wait. Use this for BD preps 500 and 501 as well as any biological treatment.
- Frost alerts — when do they fire?
- Whenever the forecast drops below 2 °C in the next 24 h. Toggle in Profile → Preferences.
Phone calendar sync (ICS)
- How do I add the biodynamic calendar to my phone?
- In Calendar → Today, use the 'Add to phone calendar' section. Copy the ICS URL and paste it into Apple Calendar → Add Subscription, or Google Calendar → Add other calendars → From URL. It refreshes automatically.
- Which feeds are available?
- All events (all.ics), day-types only (day-types.ics), warnings only (warnings.ics), or just constellation transitions (transitions.ics). Subscribe to as many as you like.
Demeter dossier & printing
- How do I create an inspector-ready PDF?
- Calendar → 'Farm dossier' button. Pick a date range (30 days, this season, this year, or all-time). Then use your browser's Print → Save as PDF. The report includes farm summary, bed roster, yield charts, harvest log and field notes with photos.
- Weekly print view?
- Calendar → Print icon. One-page weekly overview with day types, tasks, and weather — designed for the pinboard in the pack-shed.
Data & privacy
- Where is my data stored?
- In your browser (local-first) and mirrored to a private cloud row that only you can read. Row-level security ensures no other user can see your farm.
- Can I export everything?
- Yes — Profile → Preferences → Data portability. CSV export for field notes, harvests, seed stock and livestock. Full JSON snapshot available on request.
- Can I delete my account?
- Yes — Profile → Account → Delete. Removes all farm state and field notes within 24 hours.
